Hamilton Municipal Building
20 High Street

One of only two Art Deco structures in the city, Hamilton's Municipal Building was designed and built by Frederick Mueller in 1935 as a federal public works project. Carvings surround both the High Street and Monument Avenue entrances, depicting the growth of Hamilton from pioneer days to the city's industrial heritage. The carvings were designed by Hamilton native Robert McCloskey, who achieved national fame as the award winning author of Make Way for Ducklings, Lentil and other children's books. Displayed in the Council Chambers is a large mural, Founding of the Fortress, an idealized representation of the building of Fort Hamilton in 1791, by local artist Jack Willard. To see the mural or for a tour of the building, call the Clerk of Council.
